BIRD FLU

Print PDF
At the time of writing (March 9th 2006) bird or avian flu does not pose a threat to recreational boaters in Portugal. However, the situation may change and there are some simple, sensible precautions that can be taken along with a good understanding of the potential threats in order to help in assessing any local risk.

The RYA has developed its guidance which at the present is as follows on the basis of the current understanding of both the medical and environmental aspects in terms of the spread of the disease.

It might be possible that the virus can be spread by dried bird faeces, people have asked as to whether or not it is safe to clean decks and pontoons that are covered in bird faeces?
The RYA recommend that we should wet pontoons and decks first to avoid dust, wear a dust mask and shower ourselves down afterwards.
