Own boat tuition
Whether you own a sail boat, a motor boat, a tender or a RIB the world is your oyster. We can offer any RYA course applicable to the vessel type and your experience or training tailored to your needs.
Do you need testing for your ICC?
For clients who already have a foreign licence or who have no formal licence but who can already handle and drive a yacht we offer ICC testing. It is a comprehensive test covering both the practical and theoretical sides of using a yacht. No matter how much experience someone has nobody really enjoys being examined, we therefore try to create a relaxed atmosphere where a client can best demonstrate their natural abilities. Whilst this is a test we will offer ideas and advice throughout the day to help the client achieve the best result they can. With safety and the security of boat and crew foremost our aim is to pass the candidate whenever possible!
The exam will take a full day to successfully complete, the client should have an experienced crew member to help throughout the day. Before booking they should carefully study the test and be confident that they know all parts of it, if you need an extra day or two which will help bring you up to speed we are happy to provide this.
Perhaps you have nervous crew?
We can come along and spend some time helping them understand what is going on and building their confidence. At the same time if the skipper needs help or advice we will be more than pleased to share our experience with them.
Would you like to handle the boat more confidently?
By setting a day aside and investing a relatively small amount of money we will demonstrate and teach the techniques and methods used to perfect difficult manoeuvres. Without a doubt this training will change and enhance the overall enjoyment of boat ownership. For just €300.00 we will spend a full day on your boat helping you to achieve calm and professional handling in the marina.
Thinking about taking the Yachtmaster exam?
There is no specific RYA course which prepares you for the exam which leads to this prestigious qualification, therefore we look at your strengths and bring your overall performance to the highest level possible. An in depth knowledge of all parts of the RYA Yachtmaster theory is essential before you take the exam, we can help fill in the gaps.
Every YM preparation course will be different, we pride ourselves in achieving a pass rate in excess of 90% and over the 5 days leading up to the exam we will take you through all aspects that will be covered during the exam. The examiner wants to see you demonstrate a deep knowledge of both practical and theoretical skills, he also wants your crew to be enjoying themselves and for you to be managing them in a friendly and constructive way. On a motor boat the exam lasts 6-8 hours, a sailing boat from 8-10 hours.
What is the International Certificate of Competence?
When you visit another country, in most circumstances you can be required to comply with the maritime legislation of the visited country (Coastal State) in addition to that of your vessel’s country of registration (Flag State).
The regulations for pleasure craft can vary considerably from one country to another and the regime for skipper training and licensing can be equally disparate; the ICC helps to overcome the difficulties these differences can cause.
In other words, it is an assurance from one government to another that the certificate holder is sufficiently competent to be driving a pleasure craft, despite not holding the visited country’s national certificate.

What skill sets are taught and/or tested?
It is very similar to the Day Skipper course, to download an application form or to see the syllabus click here. For clients just starting out we would recommend the full course but if you are already an experienced skipper we can arrange to test you. In accordance with your experience we can offer either the full course, a test or a few days which will help bring you up to speed. This can be done on your own boat or on our Cranchi 34 based in Albufeira marina.
Both the teaching and the examining is done in a friendly and professional manner without applying too much pressure, you should enjoy the learning process and gain knowledge in a calm environment.
5 days or 40 hours, approximately 8 hours will be theory based. If the client has completed an RYA theory course recently it may be possible to decrease this by one day, this reduction in time will be at our discretion and will involve a short test prior to the booking being confirmed.
• Acceptable in many countries worldwide as proof of the skipper’s competence. Check here.
• Can be obtained as a stand-alone “qualification” following a specific course or by submitting a Day/Coastal Skipper certificate to the RYA, there is currently (2018) a £ 45.00 charge by the RYA.
• There is no written limitation regarding the size of boat or the area of operation, the ICC can be issued for either up to or over 10 metres, generally the limit is the same as the National maximum for leisure craft i.e. 24 metres.
• Has to be renewed every 5 years.
• It is a paper certificate rather than the laminated photo card issued for Day Skipper and Coastal Skipper courses so looks less “official”.
• Cannot be used for commercial purposes.
The RYA powerboat courses are primarily for those using open powered craft such as RIBs or sports boats. They are also designed for the professional open boat skipper who is required to prove their competence or provide certification for work.
Level 1 is an introduction course which will give a basic understanding of power boating. It covers boating safety, basic boat handling and theory. This is a minimum one-day course with a minimum age limit of 8 years. Click for details.
Level 2 is a much more advanced and useful course. It covers close quarters boat handling, planing speed manoeuvres, man overboard recovery and collision regulations along with lots of other skills which will help you really enjoy your boat. The minimum age for this course is 12 years, the minimum duration is two days but to gain the maximum value we strongly recommend that you have an extra day learning some very useful navigation theory. The theory day is in the classroom before you take part in the practical, this way you are able to put into practice everything that you learn. At the end of the course you will be able to handle your boat confidently in familiar waters and park it safely in the marina. Click for details.
Of course if you have already taken an RYA navigation course and are confident of your knowledge we can move straight on to the practical. We would just ask a few questions beforehand to establish that your knowledge is current.
Mostly, these courses are run on your own powerboat or rib so that you can get used to the way it handles and have specific help to the type of boat you will be driving.
If you don't have your own boat but still want to do one of these training levels then this can also be arranged by us.
