The RYA powerboat Scheme courses are primarily for those using open powered craft such as RIBs or sports boats. They are also designed for the professional open boat skipper who is required to prove their competence or provide certification for work.
Powerboat Level 1 is a one-day introduction course with a minimum age limit of 8 years which gives a basic understanding of power boating. It covers basic safety equipment, how to launch and recover the boat and use of a kill chord. You will also learn very basic boat handling including starting, stopping, leaving, and coming alongside and securing to a mooring buoy.
Powerboat Level 2 is a much more advanced and useful course and provides a level of training that is ideal for anyone from the casual weekend user through to some commercial users.
It covers close quarters boat handling, launching and recovery, use and care of safety equipment, basic knots, fast and slow speed boat handling, use of trim, man overboard and recovery, coming along side and leaving a mooring, anchoring, and securing to a buoy. Additionally, as part of the course you will also learn some basic navigation and the factors that need to be considered when planning your trip such as weather information and sources, tides, and collision regulations along with lots of other skills which will help you really enjoy your boat.
The minimum age for this course is 12 years, and the duration is two days, the theory is in the classroom before you take part in the practical, this way you can put into practice everything that you learn. At the end of the course, you will be able to handle your boat confidently in familiar waters and park it safely in the marina. Click for details.
This course will also enable you to apply to the RYA for your ICC (International Certificate of Competence) (depending on Nationality). This qualification is required by most European countries to validate your competence to own or charter a boat.
The ICC is obtained by presenting your Powerboat Level 2 certificate and will cover all powerboats up to 10 metres in length, as a bonus it also covers a jet ski!
Mostly, these courses are run on our school RIB based in Vilamoura Marina, but we can also offer the same course on your own boat so you can get used to the way it handles and have specific help on the type of boat you will be driving.
